The board conducted a special meeting to deliberate and vote on two key public policy agenda items. Both resolutions involved placing advisory questions on the ballot for the November 3, 2026, general election. The first resolution focused on a proposed surcharge on millionaires to generate additional funding for public schools. The second resolution concerned a civil penalty for vacant or undeveloped commercial and investment properties. The board engaged in a discussion regarding the nature of these referenda, emphasizing the need to explore long-term revenue solutions despite current budget challenges.
The committee meeting focused on two main advisory referendum proposals aimed at generating additional revenue for public schools. The first proposal discussed seeking state revenue through a surcharge on millionaires to combat funding disparities. The second proposal involved a potential annual charge on owners of long-term vacant or underdeveloped commercial and investment properties. The board members discussed the positive impacts of these measures on community safety, property maintenance, and school funding while addressing concerns regarding potential impacts on low-income residents and the implementation mechanisms.
The board meeting focused on student leadership and engagement initiatives, highlighting the importance of incorporating student voices into decision-making processes. Key topics included the role of student advisory councils and committees, mental health roundtables and resources, student voice in budget discussions, and addressing the impact of budget cuts on school programs and services. Board members expressed commitment to expanding student voice committees across the district and increasing student agency.
